In recognition of the generous naming gift from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the new 25,000-square-foot state-of-the-art performance and technology center, supports our vision of transforming music education in the 21st century and draws ever closer to the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music.

At a beam signing in March 2022, University President Julio Frank said, “The Knight Center for Music Innovation is an exquisite expression of the Knight Foundation’s enduring impact on the University of Miami and our South Florida community. Thanks to their generosity, this spectacular new complex will match the extraordinary talent of our students, faculty, and alumni….

Designed by H3, an Arquitectonica Company, the Knight Center for Music Innovation is a marvelous fusion of architecture and technology, featuring:

  • a stunning facade that will overlook Lake Osceola
  • a vast array of next-generation features and facilities that will enable Frost students, faculty, and visiting artists to experiment, explore, and develop new modalities in musical performance
  • a world-class, acoustically superior 200-seat recital hall
  • a large black-box innovation space
  • the most advanced recording, lighting, and broadcast technology, elevating Frost’s performance, rehearsal, and teaching spaces

In addition to these enhancements, a beautifully landscaped Newman Plaza is a vibrant and welcoming gathering point – further strengthens the University’s connections to our Coral Gables campus and the Greater Miami community. The Plaza showcases live music and other presentations on a 20-foot-by-40-foot LED “Windowcast” system regularly. Further drawing in our U community, a giant external wall facing the intramural fields is utilized to “wallcast” headline performances and international artists.

The $36.5 million Knight Center for Music Innovation is one of the shining achievements of Ever Brighter: The University of Miami’s Campaign for Our Next Century which is currently underway.
